In this episode, I talk with two teachers to hear their view on curriculum, instruction, and assessment. Leslie Jordan, 1st grade (formally 4th grade), and Mary Dickerson, 6th grade, share their experiences, needs, and wants for education inside and outside of the classroom.
They share their praise of being in a division that allows them to take risks, but also how important it is to have vertical alignment in order to use that ability to take risks and to understand one another. Many times grades will place blame on the grades below them if they feel like standards are not being met or student achievement is not where "it should be." However, when teachers are able to collaborate within grade level, division level, and across grade level as PLCs then eyes, ears, and minds start to open about the support and structure that needs to be in place in order to best promote student learning.
